Ball bearings are small balls made of metal which are used, in different types of machines, to decrease friction. So it is also called anti-friction bearings. It is used in different moving devices to allow them to move freely. It is also used to lessen friction in axle assemblies and absorb the heaviness of an object placed on a moving device. One of the most common devices which use anti-friction bearings includes the roller skates. It is also used in different industrial applications to reduce friction and simplify movement of machines.
Though these devices are quite efficient and essential to lessen friction, like any other mechanical device, it is also susceptible to damages and drawbacks. Some of the most important issues related to ball bearings are elaborated below.
Cleanliness: Constant lubrication is essential for the smooth functioning of these devices. Nevertheless, lubrication such as oil and grease can jam the bearings when it gets accumulated. The device may then stop working or may not function appropriately. It is quite important to clean these devices frequently to avoid the accumulation of oil, grease and dirt. It is also necessary to check these devices regularly and keep it clean. The device needs to be cleaned before the application of lubricants.
Noise: Another issue related to these devices includes extreme noise which can affect the surrounding places. Some of the machines may include ball bearing which produce distracting noise. It can be quite distracting and annoying in places of work and other serene places such as hospitals. It is quite necessary to replace these anti-friction bearings.
Corrosion: Most of the machines are exposed to dirt, water and high level of moisture. Ball bearings are metallic balls so it is susceptible to corrosion and damages. Corrosion is mainly caused due to exposure to water and moisture. When it is exposed to water or moisture, it can damage and fail to function appropriately. It is therefore quite necessary to examine the bearings occasionally so that it can be maintained properly. It is also essential to dry these devices if it is exposed to huge amount of water, before it is used again.
Vibration: These devices are also prone to constant vibrations as it is used in devices that move or spin regularly. Although ball bearings are mainly used to reduce friction and vibration, constant shaking can cause these metal pieces to move and rattle. This can cause dislodging of the anti-friction bearings. It may then fall loose in the machines and cause further damages to the machines. It is therefore very essential to check these bearings before using the machines.
Overuse: Like any other mechanical devices, anti-friction bearings are prone to damage due to overuse and extreme pressure. However, regular maintenance can extend its durability and performance to a large extent.
These devices vary according to its functions as the bearings used in drawer slides are quite different from the devices used in roller skates and so forth. Different types of anti-friction balls are used for different applications.
