Usefulness of Magnus Effect And CF Rotor

If you are acquainted with various mechanical instruments, you are bound to know about the CF rotor. It is a mechanical instrument that compresses a fixed quantity of fixed air or fluid at a specific pressure with its each movement. It is a single stage or double stage rotor which has single or dual action with reciprocation system.

This type of mechanical instrument works on the principle of Magnus effect. It is the phenomena of the object in which a spinning object flying in a fluid forms a maelstrom of fluid around itself and as a result it experiences a perpendicular force to the line of action. In other words, when the spinning object passes through a fluid it instantly deviates from its straight path due to the pressure differences which is created in the fluid due to the fluctuations in the velocity induced by the spinning motion of the object. This property of the object is solely responsible for the bended motion of a spinning ball in different ball sports like tennis, volleyball, football, golf, cricket, table tennis, marker balls and baseball.

In the year of 1962, the German physicist Heinrich Magnus described this Magnus effect. However Sir Isaac Newton correctly inferred the cause of this effect when he was observing the tennis players in his college days at Cambridge College in 1672. Later in 1742, a British artillery engineer named Benjamin Robins explained deviations in the trajectories of musket balls with this phenomenon. But as this property is invented by the German physicist Heinrich Magnus, this effect is known to us by his name.

In the popular ball games, the Magnus effect can be easily observed. In tennis or table tennis, an experienced player can easily spin the ball to deviate the trajectory of the ball. The slice or hook of the golf ball is largely dependent on this phenomenon. It causes a vertical force that counteracts the force of gravity and enables the ball to remain airborne a little longer than the non-spinning ball. The spin of the ball allows it to travel farther than a non-spinning ball. This effect also contributes a lot on the spinning ball in cricket.

The Collapsible Flettner rotor or the CF rotor is mainly fitted on the ship's deck and is used to convert the wind power into forward thrust. It is a hollow metal spinning column that makes the wind direction favorable to the ship and helps the ship to move forward. The positivity of this rotor is that it can fold itself automatically at the proper time which is very important during loading operations or when the rotor ship navigates through narrow areas.

In short, the CF rotor is totally dependent on the Magnus effect which has improved the shipping motion a lot and it is in high demand due to its various advantages.
