Ray Ban History
Ray Bans were initially produced in 1936 by Bausch and Lomb on the request of Lieutenant John Macready, a balloonist who thought that the glare from the sun was damaging his vision. He asked Bausch and Lomb to fashion & develop a pair of sun glasses that would cover his eyes from the glare of the sun while providing an fashionable look. Bausch and Lomb set about producing these glasses and developed the primary patent in late 1936.
The primary Ray Bans were designed with gold plated metallic frames and green mineral glass lenses which filtered out infrared and ultraviolet rays. These proved effective at lowering glare at higher altitudes and were promptly adopted by the US Air force and were ultimately issued to the US Army as well. Ray Bans became popular when Ray Ban aviator sunglasses were worn by General Douglas MacArthur as he walked onto the beach on his return to the Philippines during World War 2. These pictures have been, and still are routinely published world wide & caused a dramatic boost in the sale of Ray Bans in the late forties.
In 1952 Ray Ban designed the first wayfarer style glasses with acrylic frames. Plastic framed wayfarers, particularly the iconic white framed wayfarers were soon adopted by the trend setters of the fifties and were typically worn by movie stars and musicians including Marilyn Monroe and James Dean.
Types of Lenses
Over the decades Ray Ban has improved the effectiveness of their lenses. The initial green mineral glass lenses have evolved into a range of different lenses, each with its very own distinctive strengths. Ray Bans high contrast brown lenses are designed to block out blue light and therefore are mostly utilized for driving and sports activities. Their neutral grey lenses are intended to lessen eye strain and to see shades correctly. They also made polarised lenses to lower glare and light adaptive lenses which alter their darkness to match the amount of ambient light so they are able to be worn inside and out of doors and across diverse amounts of shade.
All Ray Ban lenses are manufactured to withstand the Drop Ball Test. This test makes use of a 5/8' metal ball that is dropped onto the lens from a height of fifty inches to make certain the lens will stand up to the toughest treatment.
