Cleveland CG16 Wedge Is Similar to the CG14 Wedge
Cleveland is back with new wedges for 2011 called the CG16s. They will be available in finishes in satin, black pearl, and oil quenchh. They offer conforming grooves and have the beautiful laser milling right on the face.
Those that were at the THP Demo Day had an opportunity to try these out and this is a chance to give their full feedback and look at the pictures again. Those that were not able to make it, here are some pictures of the new irons for 2011 from Cleveland Golf.
The Cleveland CG16 wedge looks very similar to the CG14 wedge but without the insert and it is not surprising given that it comes from the same mould. However the colour insert has been replaced with a cavity back and this not only looks better but also improves stability and forgiveness on off-centre hits.
In addition, Cleveland say that this style of wedge is very popular on Tour, especially in the sand iron lofts. However we were not as keen as the extra forgiveness has meant a trade off on feel, which is not as crisp as the CG15 wedge and the wider was not as effective on softer lies. With respect to the tour, we feel that these are good wedges for aspiring mid handicappers and those who want more forgiveness from a wedge they use a lot from the fairway.
In contrast to the Cleveland CG16 Irons that combine wedge technology into irons, the CG16 wedges now sport a cavity back design and a deeper, hollow cavity. The cavity back design increases MOI meaning the Cleveland CG16 wedge will offer greater forgiveness, whilst the deeper cavity helps lower the centre of gravity and improves the playability of the club.
Well, Jack Palmer - who may or may not be related to Arnold - has spent his years on the links noting down these little ditties and now he's collated them all in a funny, easy-to-read book - published by Summersdale and available now.
The Black Pearl finish looked great behind the ball and feedback from the club was excellent. Wish I had waited for these wedges instead of buying the CG14s. The CG16 wedge has gone back to a straighter address line, which I like a lot.
